At AICHER our research aims to understand how universities can adapt to a growing and diverse student population in an increasingly complex world. We use an interdisciplinary, data-driven and team-based approach that connects research directly to practice.

Much of our current research looks at how artificial intelligence is changing higher education, for teachers, for students, and for the institutions in between. We are interested in questions such as how large language models can be used responsibly in grading, how academic language shapes student success, or how AI-driven feedback tools affect student engagement and well-being. Alongside this, we look more broadly at what makes learning effective, fair and inclusive.

Building Interdisciplinary Team Science for Future-proof Higher Education

AICHER emerged from the Research Priority Area ‘Building Interdisciplinary Team Science for Future-proof Higher Education’. This RPA was set up to address the central challenges facing higher education today: how can universities serve a growing and diverse student population, meet societal expectations, and adapt to the ongoing digitalisation of teaching and learning? Researchers in the AICHER community combine perspectives from (among others) educational science, psychology, economics, sociology, AI and data science. The goal of both the RPA and the center is to translate this research into lasting positive change in higher education at the UvA and beyond.

Grants

The Research Priority Area has funds for internal (UvA) grants. These are seed and valorisation grants. We are currently designing the application process for these grants.
